Puppy and Kitten Exams

Welcoming a new puppy or kitten into your household is an exciting and very important event.

With needs that are quite different compared to adult dogs and cats, we have special exams catered just for puppies and kittens.

Depending on age, three to four visits are recommended, starting at 8 weeks of age, for both puppies and kittens.

During each visit, your veterinarian will conduct a thorough physical examination to assess your puppy or kitten’s overall condition of health. We will review any records and/or vaccine history that you may have and will also discuss the following:

  • Diet and feeding schedules
  • House training concerns
  • Grooming and sleeping habits
  • Activity level
  • Chewing or biting behaviors
  • Parasite prevention and control


Depending on age, weight, previous vaccination history and the health of your puppy or kitten, we recommend the following vaccination schedules:


Puppy Vaccination Schedule

6-8 weeks old:

  • Physical exam
  • DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptovirus, ParaInfluenza, Parvo virus) vaccination (1st) *
  • Fecal check for intestinal parasites ~ important - people can get some of these parasites
  • De-worming
  • Begin heartworm and flea/tick preventative

 

10-12 weeks old:

  • Physical exam
  • DHLPP vaccination booster *
  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccination - if groomed, boarded or class situations
  • Fecal check for intestinal parasites
  • De-worming
  • Continue heartworm and flea/tick preventative

 

14-16 weeks old:

  • Physical exam
  • DHLPP - Protected now for 1 year *
  • Rabies vaccination - Protected now for 1 year
  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccination ~ if groomed, boarded or class situations
  • Fecal check for intestinal parasites
  • De-worming
  • Continue heartworm and flea/tick preventative
  • At this age, we will discuss when it is the best time for your puppy to be spayed (female) or castrated (male)
  • We recommend micro-chipping your pet. Micro-chipping is a safe, simple and permanent form of pet identification. This can be done at time of Spay/Neuter.


*- Some breeds depending on weight and age may not get the Leptovirus portion of this vaccination but given at a later date.



KITTEN VACCINATION SCHEDULE

6-8 weeks old:

  • Physical examination
  • Feline Leukemia Virus/Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Tests
  • Feline Rhino-Calici-Panleukopenia vaccination (1st)
  • Feline Leukemia vaccination (1st)  *
  • Fecal check for intestinal parasites
  • Deworming

 

10-12 weeks old:

  • Physical examination
  • Feline Rhino-Calici-Panleukopenia vaccination (2nd)
  • Feline Leukemia vaccination (2nd)  *
  • Fecal check for intestinal parasites
  • Deworming if needed

 

14-16 weeks old:

  • Physical examination
  • Feline Rhino-Calici-Panleukopenia vaccination- current for 1year
  • Feline Leukemia vaccination- current for 1 year
  • Rabies vaccination- current for 1 year
  • Fecal check for intestinal parasites
  • Deworming if needed
  • At this age your kitten is now old enough to be spayed (female) or neutered (male)
  • Ask the veterinarian about a microchip your pet. Microchipping is a safe, simple and permanent form of pet identification.

 

* - Recommended for felines that will be going outside part time and or all the time.
